One year as a child I went to a halloween party that mostly existed outside in the woods. They made a haunted walkthrough that included a slide embedded into the forrest floor, with candles or glow sticks stuck in the muck surrounding it, and hidden ghouls jumping out in the dark. It was exhilarating. Someone made veggie chili and every time I smell it I'm taken back to that haunted outdoor cascading slide in my cold black tulle witches dress.
One of my favorite Halloweens was 2019. We went to Beacon Hill, Boston, which I had heard has stellar trick-or-treating. The streets were blocked off to traffic, houses were dolled up to the nines; I remember lanterns looping over our heads in those tiny cobblestone alleys, and chickenwire ghosts in the grass. And there were so many families, kids, adults dressed up. It was just a very festive communal atmosphere in this very picturesque neighborhood.
